I’ve been around enough Little Leaguers to know that most of them have big league dreams.
They imagine they’re playing for the Red Sox or swinging a hot bat like A-Rod for the Yankees or Albert Pujols for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Two teams of 10-year-old boys in Hermosa Beach, California, got a taste of what being a professional player can mean on game day.
The group Improv Everywhere put together an elaborate prank that involved NBC Sports, a portable jumbotron and a visit by the Goodyear blimp to make these kids feel like they were taking part in the World Series. Even the parents and coaches were fooled by this exercise. Only one official with the city’s Little League program knew what was about to take place.
The improv group flooded the stands with extra cheering fans, printed programs that featured the players “baseball card” images, brought in mascots and got famous sportscaster Jim Gray to participate in a “broadcast” of the game over a PA system.
Complete details on how they pulled off this prank are available here.
