The Air Bud movies, despite how seemingly useless all of the sequels have been, have taught us one thing: dogs are super athletic. They love sports, they are good at sports, and we should let them play sports.
But first they will need a selection of athletic events to choose from. Thankfully, Mental Floss blog has compiled a list of “8 Sports Your Dog Can Play.”
While the list does not include “finding small boys named Timmy down wells and going for help” or “saving entire Alaskan towns from dying of diphtheria” (I’m lookin’ at you two, Lassie and Balto!), it does include classic competitions such as the disc dog Frisbee freestyle and the lure competition meant for sighthounds (greyhounds, Irish wolf hounds).
In addition to these, OMG Lists dug deep into the history of dog sports to find such gems as the dog pull. This event, which you can view below, is parallel in every way to the traditional tractor pull. Except there are no tractors. Just dogs. Intended to keep working dogs in shape, this competition requires the dog to be strapped into a body harness that attaches to a platform piled high with things like bags of soil. And this is a true canine competition because there are no handlers allowed!
