Rocking The Floor Organ With Some Bach

Posted 5/28/2009 9:16 am by Ron Hogan

You know what movie made gigantic floor pianos look fun? Big. Everyone who has ever seen the movie will, when walking by any toy store of sufficient size, duck inside to see just where the giant floor piano is. They might even attempt to play something on it. I’ve done this many times, yet I’ve never managed to come close to what these two girls can accomplish on their giant floor keyboard. They rock; I’m more like a clumsy robot.

The song, which you’ll recognize but may not know, is Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach (or as his friends call him, Johnny S.). It was memorably played in the opening of Disney’s Fantasia, and is the song of choice for the Phantom of the Opera and everyone looking to play off the Phantom of the Opera. I believe it’s one of those tunes everyone knows and enjoys, simply because of its longtime association with creepy!

Beastie Boys And Battlestar Galactica: A Mash Made In Heaven

Posted 3/11/2010 6:00 am by Ron Hogan

Enjoy this one while it’s around, gang, because I have no idea how long it’ll manage to stay online (though Battlestar Rhapsody is still around, thankfully).  From the credit montage to the fighter ship doing doughnuts, some creative genius has completely remade the famous Beastie Boys video “Sabotage” featuring an all-Battlestar Galactica cast.  The title […]

The Endless Night: A Film Noir Tribute

Posted 3/05/2010 8:00 am by Ron Hogan

There’s just something about old Hollywood that speaks to me, and there’s no style of movie more elemental, more vital, and more impressive than film noir.  Those old black and white detective mysteries from the 1930’s and 1940’s still captivate audiences, and still influence modern filmmakers, cartoonists, and comic book writers to this day.  There’s […]

    Brittney Griner’s Punch-Out

Posted 3/05/2010 7:30 am by Ron Hogan

There’s nothing better than a good old-fashioned sports controversy, and boy, is this one big.  Like, 6′8 women’s basketball player Brittney Griner big.  Given that she’s bigger than most everyone else on the court, Brittney Griner gets a lot of aggressive defense, but during a game versus Texas Tech, this giant proved she is not […]

    This Too Shall Pass

Posted 3/03/2010 10:30 am by Ron Hogan

A lot of companies are struggling to adjust to the new way of things, and while the USPS is bad, they look like progressives next to your average record company.  For example, consider the case of “This Too Shall Pass.”  It’s the first single off the latest OK Go album, Of the Blue Colour of […]

    World Record Motorcycle Jump

He flies through the air with the greatest of ease.  Seth Enslow isn’t a man on a flying trapeze, however; he’s more like a tattooed madman on the back of a specialized Harley Davidson.   Enslow took a Harley-Davidson XR1200, put a dirt bike suspension and handlebars on it, and then used that bike to […]

    Rickroll Video Removed Then Restored

Posted 2/25/2010 9:30 am by Ron Hogan

Yesterday, the collective heart of the Internet skipped a beat when that old reliable video, Rick Astley singing “Never Gonna Give You Up” that launched a worldwide sensation known as Rickrolling, got taken down by YouTube and parent company Sony/BMG for copyright violations.  However, rest assured that YouTube is never gonna give Rickrolling up.  Calling […]

Dirty Dancing Teachers Land School In Hot Water

Posted 2/25/2010 7:30 am by Ron Hogan

Two teachers, when asked to perform at a high school pep rally, took things from the gym to the strip club with their routine.  Chrystie Fitchner, a physical education teacher, and an unnamed male teacher performed a little routine students dubbed Two Teachers, One Chair, which featured Fitchner receiving a lap dance from a male […]

Frozen Animal Head Found In Green Beans

Posted 2/24/2010 8:00 am by Ron Hogan

All Ernestine Jamison wanted to do was make a nutritious meal.  It was nutritious, all right; when she tore open her bag of Pictsweet green beans and poured the contents into a bowl, she found a little more than green beany goodness in her bag.  The frozen vegetables also contained the frozen head of an […]

    3-D Hurts Your Brain

Posted 2/23/2010 7:00 am by Ron Hogan

It’s one of my biggest problems with 3-D movies.  I don’t mind paying extra, nor do I mind wearing goofy plastic eyeglasses.  However, I do mind the headaches and blurred vision that usually accompanies 3-D movies.  I figured I was in the minority on this, but VOA News suggests that 3-D headaches, eye strain, and […]

Pelican Attacks Weatherman, Becomes Hero To Millions

Posted 2/18/2010 9:00 am by Ron Hogan

It was just supposed to be a silly little remote piece.  You know, they take the wacky weatherman, in this case Channel Nine’s Steve Jacobs, and they put him in the zoo and have the handlers show off some of the various animals.  Like, for instance, a pelican named Marnie.   However, things did not […]

    Weather Forecaster Goes Bananas

Posted 2/17/2010 8:00 am by Ron Hogan

It’s not often that you see a member of the media completely lose his mind on air, but apparently meteorologist Jim Kosek of AccuWeather.com does this on a pretty regular basis.  That’s why, when I tried to find Jim Kosek’s specific Snowpocalypse freakout concerning Washington, D.C., there were dozens of videos of him presenting the […]

    Rock Sugar’s Genre-Bending Music Madness

Posted 2/16/2010 10:30 am by Ron Hogan

There’s nothing more fun than a good fake band idea.  For example, according to their back story, the band Rock Sugar (warning:  video automatically starts) spent 20 years on a desert island before returning to the world and bringing back their unique blend of pop and heavy metal.  I doubt that actually happened; what I […]

    Attack Of The Toilet Rats

Posted 2/15/2010 10:30 am by Ron Hogan

The very unlucky Kara Weatherman made an unusual discovery the other day.  Apparently, a rat had gotten into her Winston-Salem, North Carolina, bathroom via the toilet, of all places.  So she did what any person would in that situation; she grabbed the plunger and an empty container of cat litter and she scared that rat […]
