When I was watching the Super Bowl this weekend, I saw a lot of the ads. One of the most notable was the “Grab Some Air” ad for the United States Air Force, and it wasn’t notable for a good reason. It was a notable advert because, when I listened to the ad, I noticed that they had used a song from The White Stripes to put into the ad. Well, it turns out the Air Force commercial stole the song, not licensed it. Seriously, just compare the two yourself.
First, “Grab Some Air.” (It starts about 7-8 seconds in.)
And now, The White Stripes hit, “Fell In Love With A Girl.”
If that’s not the exact same song, with the exact same chord progression, tempo, etc., then I’m the Pope of Chilitown. I know times are tough, and the Air Force needs all the help it can get recovering old missiles and fighting wars, but there’s no need to open yourself up to action by blatantly stealing someone else’s song, especially when you can do what they used to do for wrestling theme songs in the WCW days and just produce sound-alike versions that are slightly different, but close enough to pass for the intended tune.
