There’s nothing better than a good old-fashioned sports controversy, and boy, is this one big. Like, 6’8 women’s basketball player Brittney Griner big. Given that she’s bigger than most everyone else on the court, Brittney Griner gets a lot of aggressive defense, but during a game versus Texas Tech, this giant proved she is not gentle. After a hard foul from Tech’s Jordan Barncastle, Bayor Bear Griner snapped and punched her opponent in the face. Her punishment? A two-game suspension.
Ha, well, that certainly proves that a double standard exists. When LeGarret Blount, a men’s football player, sucker-punched an opponent, he got a season-long suspension (which was eventually lifted, but Blount missed a ton of games). Even Elizabeth Lambert the soccer hooligan missed more games than that, and she wasn’t so rough that play was stopped. A sucker punch is a sucker punch. In men’s basketball, if you did this, you’d miss the rest of the season and we’d still be hearing about the outrage.
Face of women’s hoops or not, Brittney Griner needs to not come back for the rest of the year. I know no one really cares about women’s basketball, but a punch is a punch. If you can dunk like a man, then you should get suspended like one.
