College kind of sucks. It’s expensive, you don’t get what you pay for, the food is bad, the living conditions are worse, and did I mention the fact that you have to learn and do work? However, if you want a college course that really sucks (the blood from your neck), then might I suggest you check out the University of Hertfordshire in the UK? Not only are they hosting a vampire-themed literature conference called “Open Graves, Open Minds: Vampires and the Undead in Modern Culture,” they’re also the home of the first Master of Arts degree in vampire fiction.
The conference and the major are the brain children of Sam George, a lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire. Her goal is a noble one: return the vampire to his British roots. “I aim to put the British vampire back on the map,” she said in a statement on the University’s web site, noting that the vampire has become romanticized (by Twilight and the like) and Americanized (by True Blood). Hopefully, a companion course in vampire science is forthcoming.
