It’s pretty often that I get excited by a movie trailer. The whole point of the thing is to show you the most awesome parts of the movie and convince you that showing up to watch the film in the cinema is worth your $10 (or more). Even if I know a movie is going to be bad, I can get amped for a trailer. However, when I saw the trailer for Super 8, the upcoming JJ Abrams/Steven Spielberg collaboration?
First of all, a collaboration between two guys of this magnitude is great for movie fans in general. Spielberg knows how to collaborate with other directors, which is why the first three Indiana Jones movies were so good (Spielberg and George Lucas) and why Poltergeist is an underrated classic (Spielberg and Tobe Hooper). Secondly, it’s a movie about one of my favorite pet subjects, Area 51, the infamous secretive government installation in Nevada. Thirdly, it’s big-budget sci-fi, which I really enjoy. Just check out the trailer and tell me you don’t geek out, despite the fact that it’s some crappy cell-phone camera footage.
