Even Motorhead knows the power of Louie Louie.
There’s nothing spectacular about today, April 11, except for one thing. On April 11, 1935, Richard Berry was born. You probably don’t know Richard Berry, but you do know his most famous song. Richard Berry wrote the seminal rock and roll classic, “Louie Louie,” and as such, today is International Louie Louie Day. I kid you not, there’s a whole holiday dedicated to Louie Louie, thanks to the LLAMAS. (Not actual llamas.)
LLAMAS, or the Louie Louie Advocacy and Music Appreciation Society, kicked off the day on April 11, 2007. It’s merely the culmination of a variety of state efforts to declare a day in honor of everyone’s favorite mumbled-word shout-along rock and roll song, made famous by The Kingsmen and rocketed into pop culture immortality thanks to the movie Animal House. Shall we rock and roll, ladies and gents? I think we should.
