I have a list of artists I want to see before they (or I) die. Every so often, a name will pop up as being someone who has passed away and I’ll heave a sigh and mark them off my list. Charlie Louvin, one half of the Country Music Hall-of-Fame Louvin Brothers, was on that list. Charlie Louvin passed away at age 83 from pancreatic cancer. Time to check another name off my list.
Amazingly enough, Charlie Louvin’s music career didn’t really slow down. Throughout the years, Charlie kept working. He put an album out last year, in fact, and was touring until his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer (which killed Patrick Swayze and imperils Aretha Franklin, another name on the list). In fact, he was optimistic about his recovery and even had future tour dates booked that will now be unfulfilled.
I only recently discovered the Louvin Brothers and the magic of their impeccable two-part harmonies, and I wish I had heard of them five years ago when I could’ve seen Charlie play live. They were, and are, incredible. If you’ve never heard them, give the song below a listen and tell me it’s not amazing.
