Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Kurt Russell in The Thing.
When it comes to franchise manufacturing, the best way to make a sequel to a movie is to either A) set it well after the original, or B) make a prequel. When it comes to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing, your best bet is to probably set up the original film, and that’ s just what’s happening in the 2011 version of the horror classic. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton, it’s the story of what happened to set up the events of John Carpenter’s The Thing, and it’s being called… The Thing. That’s right, The Thing‘s prequel is The Thing, and don’t you DARE get it confused! Let’s take a look at the trailer, shall we?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g2kASeEXUoYou know, while I’m not sold of the casting of Ramona Flowers in this movie, I have to give the filmmakers props. Director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. doesn’t exactly nail the look and feel of the early 80’s, the claustrophobic feeling the first film had down is present. As for the script, it’s by Ronald D. Moore (of Battlestar Galactica reboot fame and the inspiration for the Beastie Boys meets Battlestar Galactica viral video sensation) and Eric Heisserer (who wrote on the Freddy-centric reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street), so I’m pretty sure it’ll be solid.
Provided the new flick doesn’t retcon the devastation seen in the beginning of The Thing, I’ll allow it. After all, The Thing (original) was a remake of an older flick called The Thing From Another World, and The Thing is a modern classic. Maybe this flick can one-up The Thing and be even better, much like The Thing was better from its original film.
