A vintage ad for a vintage audience reaction track.
One of the things about watching old movies is that you can never put yourself in that place and time to actually see the movie with the eyes that the audience would have. You’re watching it at home or at a revival screening, and you’re jaded because you’ve seen countless other films that were inspired by the original, were remakes of the original, or just plain ripped off the original. Well, someone has uncovered something pretty cool that might help you see what audiences in the late 70’s saw as they watched John Carpenter’s seminal slasher flick, Halloween. A real 1978 recording of live audience reactions to Halloween which was synced up to video.

I love the way the audience freaks out when Myers slowly sits up, and I really love the guy that yells “One more time!” as Donald Pleasance shoots Myers. The nervous giggles when Carpenter’s iconic horror theme starts are just icing on the cake. There’s a reason John Carpenter is a master of movies, and this shows you why.
