Once upon a time, Bobby Knight and his disciples ruled the college basketball world. They were rude and dismissive to reporters and students, and physically violent and mentally abusive towards players. In particular, Knight was legendary for this, throwing chairs, grabbing players, threatening to whip players, calling them every name in the book, berating anyone and everyone who got in his way. Those days are long gone, and coaches are held to a different standard of behavior these days. Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice was caught on video insulting, berating, shoving players, and throwing basketballs at players during practice.
ESPN’s Outside The Lines exposed Rice yesterday, bringing to public attention videos from his practices.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVoOtpDuZwACoach Rice was suspended for a few games in December for his practice behavior, which I assume is the behavior caught on video. What is incredible is that Rice wasn’t immediately fired. I imagine that might change now that the court of public opinion is weighing in. The language is bad enough, but shoving players and whipping basketballs at them is just going way, way too far.
I guess that’s a reason why Rutgers is a football school.
