When you’re Lady Gaga, you get your inspiration from the least expected of sources. After critics complained that “Born This Way” was simply Madonna’s “Vogue” with new lyrics, Gaga got creative. Her second video, “Judas,” takes its inspiration not from 80’s pop but from religious text. That’s right, Lady Gaga took the Biblical story of Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus and turned it into a big-budget music video. The video debuted on E! last night; not coincidentally, E! is the home of Gaga’s upcoming reality show.

You might cry, and not for the visual content, well you might because the visual is beautiful, but [fans will] be proud. It’s almost like the struggle is over. It was amazing,” said Gaga’s creative director and chorographer Laurieann Gibson. Gibson and Gaga co-directed the video, which stars Norman Reedus as Judas and Gaga as Mary Magdalene. “What I learned was dealing with people that doubt my process. Or don’t understand that I’m capable of directing. I know you’re nervous, I understand. You’re looking at me like, ‘It’s a bigger artist, it’s more money.’ But you forgot, I’ve been here since Day 1. I’m really proud of it.”
Odds are this is another hit video, and another hit album for Gaga. As for the video, it’s really entertaining, what with the melodrama of Judas and Christ, Gaga’s crazy dance routines, and the fact that they obviously spent a whole lot of money making it look awesome.
